Structural Engineers – Introduction

A Structural Engineer makes sure that a building’s shape, design and the materials it is made from are strong enough to withstand the forces of nature and other pressures it has to endure. As well as working on new structures, they will also advise on how old or damaged buildings can be made safe where necessary.

They develop initial designs, calculating the stress that could arise at each point in the structure, and simulating possible situations, such as high winds and earth movements. When construction has commenced, they are often involved in inspecting the work and advising contractors. These engineers often work in partnership with architects. They also examine existing buildings, bridges and other structures to discover whether or not they are structurally sound.

They can be involved in:

  • site investigations
  • building inspections and surveys
  • project design
  • cost evaluations
  • deciding on appropriate construction methods or necessary repair work.

Colleagues in a similar field are the Building Services Engineers. Their job is to design, install and maintain the essential services such as gas, electricity, water, heating and lighting. These all help to make buildings comfortable and healthy places to live and work in.
